SUMMARY:WASTE AND CLIMATE CHANGE 10am-11.30am Wed 25 March
DESCRIPTION:Modern consumer society is currently trapped in a “take-make-waste” cycle\, with the average person in the UK generating 620kg of waste annually—a figure contributing to 5.5% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. This crisis is driven by an economic model where it is often cheaper to replace items than to fix them\, leading to a projected 70% increase in global waste by 2050. To prevent this refuse from flooding landfills and the environment\, urgent regulation is needed to transition toward a circular economy. By prioritizing the repair\, reuse\, refurbishment\, and recycling of goods\, we can break the link between economic growth and environmental degradation.

SUMMARY:WATER SUPPLY AND CLIMATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:Global water consumption has risen significantly due to population growth and industrial expansion. Currently\, 75% of the global population resides in countries classified as water-insecure\, and 50% of the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity for at least one month per year. Furthermore\, pollution frequently renders water unsafe for consumption. Climate change is exacerbating water stress through desertification and shifting weather patterns. Parts of the UK are projected to face water shortages by 2050. \nWhat actions are being taken to safeguard water supply against climate change? \nIan Hawker \n

SUMMARY:HUMAN MIGRATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE 10am Wed 27 Aug
DESCRIPTION:Over the past million years human migration has been largely driven by climate change. Since the industrial revolution green house has emissions have resulted in human generated climate change. Average global temperature have risen to 1.4C above pre-industrial levels\, with a projected rise of 2.5-2.9C by 2100. This will generate an estimated >1 billion climate migrants (external & internal) mainly from poorer equatorial countries. A managed population retreat to cooler northern countries is needed to minimise conflict. \nianhawker101@gmail.com \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85308474844?pwd=zbCVKQeCoeNgZwKnMw6PIDrjVs0VbI.1 \nMeeting ID: 853 0847 4844\nPasscode: Saturn

SUMMARY:UK CLIMATE IN TRANSITION
DESCRIPTION:The UK climate is undergoing a significant transition driven by global climate change. We are seeing hotter dryer summers\, with more frequent heat waves impacting health. Also warmer wetter winters increasing flooding and affecting agriculture cycles. Associated with these changes is coastal erosion\, sea level rise and more wildfires. Government lead climate mitigation and adaptation actions are becoming more urgent. In its July report the Climate Change Committee produced a list of top 10 recommendations for consideration by the government. We review these issues and discuss the way forward. \nian hawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:THE OCEANS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:The oceans play a fundamental role in the Earth’s climate system. They cover about 71% of the planet’s surface and have a massive capacity to absorb and store heat and carbon dioxide (CO2). This crucial function helps regulate global temperatures and mitigate the impacts of climate change. However\, increasing greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are significantly affecting the oceans\, leading to a range of concerning changes. \nIan Hawker \nianhawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Climate Crisis and Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is playing a crucial role in fighting climate change by providing advanced tools for monitoring\, predicting\, mitigating\, and adapting to its impacts. AI can analyze vast datasets from satellites\, weather stations\, and other sensors to improve climate models. AI optimizes the deployment\, management\, and integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. However\, AI-powered processes can consume significant amounts of energy. It’s important to develop and implement AI solutions in an energy-efficient manner and ensure that the benefits of AI in combating climate change outweigh its own energy footprint. \nTopic: Climate Crisis Meeting\nTime: May 28\, 2025 10:00 AM London\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82178391392?pwd=v9xCxwsjE44Gf0bxS7nf6JJUKiCgjd.1 \nMeeting ID: 821 7839 1392\nPasscode: Saturn

SUMMARY:Geoengineering And Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The Earth is currently heading for a global average temperature rise of 3C above pre-industrial levels by 2100+. This is because emissions of green house gases continue to increase. These temperatures will persist for 1000s years unless carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere at scale\, or the amount of sunlight reaching the planets surface reduced. Both these geoengineering methods carry unknown risks and require further research. \nianhawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:CLIMATE TIPPING POINTS
DESCRIPTION:Dr Chris Boulton\, University Of Exeter\, will present on Climate Tipping Points \nDate 10am Wed 26 Feb \nClimate tipping points\, where large sudden and often irreversible changes are expected under gradual climate change\, are a threat to the earth system. Here\, we explore the current understanding of tipping points through various case studies and learn about what models and observations can tell us about their predictability. We will also look ahead to the research that is being carried out in the field\, and to positive tipping points\, the concept of sudden social change\, to aid the global climate crisis. \nContact Ian Hawker \nianhawker101@gmail.com \nTopic: Climate Tipping points\nTime: Feb 26\, 2025 10:00 AM London\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85892644839?pwd=jtxGOgzkgRowrihbzbJ8iJ1OC79KU4.1 \nMeeting ID: 858 9264 4839\nPasscode: Saturn

SUMMARY:CLEAN UK ENERGY BY 2030
DESCRIPTION:The UK government has set a target of 2030 to meet 100% clean energy demand. This includes a minimum of 95% of electricity generation from low carbon sources and maximum 5% of electricity generation from unabated gas. The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has agreed to meet the challenge and detailed plans will be announced later this year. The main elements of the transition to clean energy are Grid enhancement\, Planning reforms\, Renewable energy auctions and Flexibility and ‘dispatchable’ (turn on/off-able) clean power. \nWe discuss what this means in practice and the challenges ahead. \nIan Hawker \nianhawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:THE FUTURE OF ENERGY
DESCRIPTION:The future of energy depends on four main factors solar\, batteries\, energy intelligence and China. Solar power is scalable and easy to install. Lithium-ion batteries provide the storage necessary to maintain steady customer supply at lower cost than alternative techologies. Energy intelligence is the ability to interconnect multiple energy sources whilst improving efficiency. This energy revolution is mostly financed by China. \nIan Hawker \nianhawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:CLIMATE CHANGE & TRANSPORTATION
DESCRIPTION:Transport is a major contributor to climate change. The burning of fossil fuels in vehicles releases greenhouse gases\, primarily carbon dioxide\, into the atmosphere. Transport-related air pollution can have severe health consequences\, including respiratory diseases and premature death. Building roads and infrastructure can lead to habitat loss and fragmentation for wildlife. In this talk we examine how to reduce emissions for cars\, trucks\, planes and shipping.

SUMMARY:THE OCEANS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:Our oceans moderate climate change with 71% of the worlds surface is covered by oceans. These absorb 1/3 excess green house gas emissions from the atmosphere and capture 90% excess heat from the atmosphere. But the oceans are warming with ocean temperature increased by 0.9C since 1970\, leading to Arctic Ice Disintegration\, Antarctic Melting\, Sea Level Rise & Ocean Acidification. \nHow will this impact ocean food production? What about sea level rise? What can we do to mitigate and adapt to these effects?

SUMMARY:Adapting the UK to Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Continued release of greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere is pushing global average temperatures to 2C above pre-industrial levels by 2040 rising to 3C beyond 2100. We need to adapt to more extreme weather\, floods\, fires and sea level rise. In this talk we focus on the UK and consider how to adapt to climate change across 6 domains: water supply\, food security\, flooding\, extreme heat events\, public health\, nature biodiversity and wildfires. We also look at the effectiveness of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP3) published by the government in 2023. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Change Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Due to excessive greenhouse gas emissions the global average temperature of the Earth is predicted to rise by +3C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. Climate change will increase the frequency of extreme weather events and grow desertification\, affecting agriculture\, water supply and sea level rise. Equatorial regions will become largely uninhabitable leading to mass migration. How can emissions be reduced and what measures should be taken to adapt to the worst impacts?

SUMMARY:100% renewable electricity for the UK.
DESCRIPTION:The theme for today’s meeting was ‘100% renewable electricity for the UK’ \nFirst we started with a personal message concerning the future of our Climate Crisis group. \nDue to health issues I have decided to stop running this group. However\, this will not be the end of the Climate Crisis group. Ian Hawker has kindly agreed to take over my role. He unfortunately could not be present today\, but many of you will know Ian already. He has been at previous meetings and has done many talks within the U3A about Climate Change. Format and times of the meetings may change\, no doubt for the better! I hope to still be present at future meetings for a while. \nNext\, following on from our last meeting where we looked at updating Electricity Grids esp. the so called reconductoring idea and 100% renewable electricity grids\, we concentrated this time on developments specifically for the UK. As usual we watched and discussed 2 videos. \nThe first video looked at the idea of expanding the grid offshore….. \nOcean Electricity Grid. How do they do that? 14/4/24 \nThe second video looked at what we could do to increase renewable energy generation quickly so we can have 100% wind and solar. \n100% wind and solar is coming! 21/4/24 \nWe also had an interesting discussion about heat pumps with several people sharing their experiences (sometimes after using a heat pump for over 10 years!) Their experiences were positive! \nIt was a lively meeting! \nThe Zoom link for this meeting was emailed to all Climate Crisis subscribers approx. 1 week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:Upgrading Electricity Grids
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe theme for today’s meeting is Upgrading Electricity Grids. \nThe Electricity Grid for the future will have to cope with more electricity throughput and more intermittency as well as more generating units for the supply side. \nWe’ll watch and discuss 2 videos on this subject. \nOne video shows a new\, quick way to double transmission capacity at relative low cost and no hold-ups because of planning permissions. The clue is reconductoring!\n \nRethinking electricity grids. 24/3/24 \nThe other video considers how a grid can be 100% driven by intermittent\, renewable energy sources. \nCan You Run a Grid on 100% Wind + Solar? South Australia Shows Us How 17/10/23 \nIf someone wants to pose a question to the group we’ll have some time for that too. \nAs always\, we look forward to a lively meeting! \nThe Zoom link for this meeting will be emailed to all Climate Crisis subscribers approx. 1 week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:Is 1.5C still relevant?
DESCRIPTION:The theme for this meeting was two-fold. \nFirst we had a think about the 1.5C target. \nIs it still feasible or should we forget about it? We watched and discussed this video on that question.\n \nNext we’ll get much more practical by considering what we can do in our daily life to: \nLower our carbon footprint in the kitchen. \nA recording of this discussion is available here. \nSo please come prepared with tips about avoiding food waste and your experiences of using kitchen appliances that are frugal with energy (air fryer\, induction hob\, slow cooker\, Thermomix\, etc). If possible also get ready to share your contributions for posting in the chat function. \nAs always\, we look forward to a lively meeting! \nThe Zoom link for this meeting will be emailed to all Climate Crisis subscribers approx. 1 week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:And the weather forecast for the coming decades is ..........
DESCRIPTION:Climate change will have significant impacts on natural and human systems.  As well as rising temperatures\, in the future we expect to see changes to the hydrological cycle that will contribute to these impacts. \nIn this talk Dr. Stephen Blenkinsop\, Senior Lecturer and Principal Research Associate in Climate and Climate Change for the School of Engineering at Newcastle University\, examined how we derive projections of future climate. We then explored what the state-of-the-art science tells us about the extent to which climate change is responsible for recent UK extreme weather and how rainfall may change in the UK in the future. We ask what future changes might mean for our cities\, infrastructure and health\, and importantly what we can do about it. \nThe talk was followed by an extensive Q&A session \nClick here to watch a recording of the talk on YouTube \nAnd here are the slides used in the talk: Future changes in UK rainfall FINALv2

SUMMARY:Climate Crisis Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:In this meeting we watched and discussed 2 videos that raise some searching questions in relation to Climate Change. \nAre future humans really our problem? A question explored by Dave Burlace from the ‘Just have a Think’ YouTube channel \nAre we the last generation — or the first sustainable one? Environmental data scientist Hannah Ritchie digs into the numbers behind human progress across centuries\, unpacking why the conventional understanding of sustainability is misleading and showing how we can be the first generation of humans to actually achieve it. \nQuestion Time During question time we watched a video linked in this article ‘Down the Drain: What went wrong with Britain’s water system?’  \nDiscussion Forum Exciting news from our new webmaster – We now have a discussion forum specific for the Climate Crisis group! Just register and try it out.

SUMMARY:Are there enough minerals?
DESCRIPTION:Question Time \n\n\n\nIf there are any new questions for the group to discuss we’ll continue with those. Please contact me if you have a question. \n\n\n\nVideo TimeWe’re often told that new battery technology uses exotic minerals\, of which there is only a very limited supply on this planet. Surely not enough to manufacture all the batteries that we want for cars\, homes and electricity grids. Is this true or is this another ‘smoke screen’ employed by the fossil fuel industry? \n\n\n\nIn today’s meeting we’ll have a look at 2 videos that discuss this very topic. \n\n\n\nWe’ll have plenty of time for further discussions and comments. \n\n\n\nFor further details simply click climate@u3acommunities.org
