SUMMARY:Nerve Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor James Philips\nProfessor of Regenerative Medicine University College London and co-Director of the UCL Centre for Nerve Engineering \nHis research lab focuses on understanding and repairing damage in the nervous system\, using a wide range of techniques.\nThis talk will focus on how the lab is trying to solve some of the challenges associated with peripheral nerve injury. Nerves extend throughout the body\, allowing muscles to be controlled and sensation to be experienced. Nerve damage is common and can be extremely debilitating\, resulting in loss of sensation and movement and associated with chronic pain. Nerves have some natural capacity to regenerate following damage\, but in many cases there is a need for surgical tissue grafting\, and the slow rate of regeneration limits recovery of function. Advances in tissue engineering have resulted in the development of lab-grown living artificial nerve tissue that can potentially be used to bridge nerve gaps as an alternative to tissue grafts. New small molecules have been developed that can accelerate regeneration and potentially improve outcomes. SUMMARY:Adapting the UK to Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Continued release of greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere is pushing global average temperatures to 2C above pre-industrial levels by 2040 rising to 3C beyond 2100. We need to adapt to more extreme weather\, floods\, fires and sea level rise. In this talk we focus on the UK and consider how to adapt to climate change across 6 domains: water supply\, food security\, flooding\, extreme heat events\, public health\, nature biodiversity and wildfires. We also look at the effectiveness of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP3) published by the government in 2023. \n

SUMMARY:Polypharmacy and the Elderly
DESCRIPTION:Around 90% of over-65’s take prescribed medication (often several)\, and\, for at least some of these patients\, the combination remains appropriate\, year in\, year out. However\, this cannot be assumed\, and\, as a result\, ‘deprescribing’ (the reduction or cessation of inappropriate medication) may need to be implemented by a healthcare professional after a medication review. \nTo date\, however\, there’s been very little research into the opinions of older patients themselves (and their informal caregivers) towards deprescribing\, and prescription medication more broadly. That was until a team from Oxford University\, led by DPhil researcher Rebecca Garnett\, set up a series of studies to obtain feedback from this age-group specifically. The first of these\, a ‘survey of attitudes’\, was promoted among u3a members early last year\, and many of us were more than happy to take part (see link: Oxford University ‘attitudes to deprescribing’ project). \nNow\, a year on\, we’re delighted to welcome Rebecca herself to this special meeting\, to bring us up-to-date on the progress of her studies – the methodology\, how the data was collected\, and an overview of the results so far. DESCRIPTION:The theme for today’s meeting was ‘100% renewable electricity for the UK’ \nFirst we started with a personal message concerning the future of our Climate Crisis group. \nDue to health issues I have decided to stop running this group. However\, this will not be the end of the Climate Crisis group. Ian Hawker has kindly agreed to take over my role. He unfortunately could not be present today\, but many of you will know Ian already. He has been at previous meetings and has done many talks within the U3A about Climate Change. Format and times of the meetings may change\, no doubt for the better! I hope to still be present at future meetings for a while.  \nNext\, following on from our last meeting where we looked at updating Electricity Grids esp. the so called reconductoring idea and 100% renewable electricity grids\, we concentrated this time on developments specifically for the UK. As usual we watched and discussed 2 videos. \nThe first video looked at the idea of expanding the grid offshore….. \nOcean Electricity Grid. How do they do that? 14/4/24 \nThe second video looked at what we could do to increase renewable energy generation quickly so we can have 100% wind and solar. \n100% wind and solar is coming! 21/4/24 \nWe also had an interesting discussion about heat pumps with several people sharing their experiences (sometimes after using a heat pump for over 10 years!) Inconvenient new data. 14/1/24 \nBoth videos led to a lively exchange.

DESCRIPTION:Climate change will have significant impacts on natural and human systems.  As well as rising temperatures\, in the future we expect to see changes to the hydrological cycle that will contribute to these impacts. \nIn this talk Dr. Stephen Blenkinsop\, Senior Lecturer and Principal Research Associate in Climate and Climate Change for the School of Engineering at Newcastle University\, examined how we derive projections of future climate. We then explored what the state-of-the-art science tells us about the extent to which climate change is responsible for recent UK extreme weather and how rainfall may change in the UK in the future. Hydroelectric systems extract the kinetic energy of water flowing downhill (rivers and waterfalls)\, tidal power is generated from the to-and-fro movement of the tides\, and wave power is generated from the up-and-down movement of ocean waves. However\, whereas about 6% of global energy generation is hydroelectric\, the combined total of tidal and wave power is less than 1%.
