SUMMARY:Unravelling the Three-Dimensional Structure of Proteins
DESCRIPTION:These large\, complex molecules are involved in almost every function of living cells\, yet\, until very recently\, their spatial configurations – the key to their versatility – had been resolved for just a handful of the many thousands found in the human body. But today\, thanks to advances in AI\, reliable structural predictions that could take years to formulate using traditional methods\, can now be generated literally at the push of a button. In this fascinating talk\, David McLellan\, of Torridge u3a\, will review the background\, rapid evolution\, and potential benefits of this major scientific breakthrough. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Unravelling the 3D Structure of Proteins’ \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:The Uncertain Promise of New Physics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Harry Cliff\nCambridge University \nDr Harry Cliff is an experimental particle physicist\, and acclaimed science presenter\, based at the University of Cambridge.\nAt CERN’s Large Hadron Collider\, he conducts research with the LHCb experiment (which amongst other things\, will shed light on why we live in a universe that appears to be composed almost entirely of matter\, but no antimatter) He is also a past curator at the Science Museum. \nThe Uncertain Promise of New Physics will open the door to the inexplicable phenomena that science has only recently glimpsed\, and that could transform our understanding of the fundamental nature of reality. Particles with unbelievable energies are bursting from beneath the Antarctic ice. Unknown forces seem to be tugging on the basic building blocks of matter. Stars are flying away from us far faster than anyone can explain. It’s a Pandora’s box of Space Oddities. \nLet Harry open your eyes and minds and shake your current perceptions in this gentle ride through the rough terrain of scientific discovery. \nIf you are not already subscribed\, subscription is free and you will receive joining details and news about forthcoming meetings\nhttps://u3acommunities.org/subscribe-to-leading-edge/

SUMMARY:Upgrading Electricity Grids
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe theme for today’s meeting is Upgrading Electricity Grids. \nThe Electricity Grid for the future will have to cope with more electricity throughput and more intermittency as well as more generating units for the supply side. \nWe’ll watch and discuss 2 videos on this subject. \nOne video shows a new\, quick way to double transmission capacity at relative low cost and no hold-ups because of planning permissions. The clue is reconductoring!\n \nRethinking electricity grids. 24/3/24 \nThe other video considers how a grid can be 100% driven by intermittent\, renewable energy sources. \nCan You Run a Grid on 100% Wind + Solar? South Australia Shows Us How 17/10/23 \nIf someone wants to pose a question to the group we’ll have some time for that too. \nAs always\, we look forward to a lively meeting! \nThe Zoom link for this meeting will be emailed to all Climate Crisis subscribers approx. 1 week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:Leaps of Faith: The bizarre history of self-experimentation
DESCRIPTION:Think about self-experimentation\, and it probably conjures up an image like this… Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic yarn of the mad doctor and his evil alter ego. But just occasionally\, truth really can be stranger than fiction. In fact\, there are many historical – and some surprisingly recent – examples of ordinary\, respectable scientists who have chosen to take the ultimate gamble of putting their own lives on the line\, for the common good. And it’s their extraordinary real-life stories that Barry Zussman\, of Torridge u3a\, will be sharing with you today. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Leaps of Faith: Self-experimentation’ \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:Is 1.5C still relevant?
DESCRIPTION:The theme for this meeting was two-fold. \nFirst we had a think about the 1.5C target. \nIs it still feasible or should we forget about it? We watched and discussed this video on that question.\n \nNext we’ll get much more practical by considering what we can do in our daily life to: \nLower our carbon footprint in the kitchen. \nA recording of this discussion is available here. \nSo please come prepared with tips about avoiding food waste and your experiences of using kitchen appliances that are frugal with energy (air fryer\, induction hob\, slow cooker\, Thermomix\, etc). If possible also get ready to share your contributions for posting in the chat function. \nAs always\, we look forward to a lively meeting! \nThe Zoom link for this meeting will be emailed to all Climate Crisis subscribers approx. 1 week before the meeting.

SUMMARY:How Microbes Manipulate Life
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Robin May\nUniversity of Birmingham\nWe know microbes can be pretty nasty\, but you probably don’t know the half of it. Some microbes have evolved to manipulate the behaviour of their hosts in ways that increase their own chances of survival and transmission. \nRobin May will use some pretty horrid examples of microbes altering the behaviour of their hosts and then leads us on to the possibilities that exist within the human microbiome. \nScary stuff\, but his presentation is very jocular and entertaining. \nJoin us on Zoom and experience your reactions \nIf you are not already subscribed\, subscription is free and you will receive joining details and news about forthcoming meetings\nhttps://u3acommunities.org/subscribe-to-leading-edge/

SUMMARY:And the weather forecast for the coming decades is ..........
DESCRIPTION:Climate change will have significant impacts on natural and human systems.  As well as rising temperatures\, in the future we expect to see changes to the hydrological cycle that will contribute to these impacts. \nIn this talk Dr. Stephen Blenkinsop\, Senior Lecturer and Principal Research Associate in Climate and Climate Change for the School of Engineering at Newcastle University\, examined how we derive projections of future climate. We then explored what the state-of-the-art science tells us about the extent to which climate change is responsible for recent UK extreme weather and how rainfall may change in the UK in the future. We ask what future changes might mean for our cities\, infrastructure and health\, and importantly what we can do about it. \nThe talk was followed by an extensive Q&A session \nClick here to watch a recording of the talk on YouTube \nAnd here are the slides used in the talk: Future changes in UK rainfall FINALv2

SUMMARY:Hydroelectric\, Tidal and Wave Power
DESCRIPTION:by Ian Hawker (East Suffolk u3a). Hydroelectric\, tidal\, and wave power are all forms of renewable energy that harness the power of moving water to generate electricity. Hydroelectric systems extract the kinetic energy of water flowing downhill (rivers and waterfalls)\, tidal power is generated from the to-and-fro movement of the tides\, and wave power is generated from the up-and-down movement of ocean waves. However\, whereas about 6% of global energy generation is hydroelectric\, the combined total of tidal and wave power is less than 1%. What is the reason for this disparity\, and how can it be addressed? \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Hydroelectric\, Tidal & Wave Power’ video \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:The Ig Nobel Prizes 2023
DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, the ultimate recognition of ground-breaking scientific research has been the award of a Nobel Prize. But there’s another series of annual awards\, less prestigious but no less cherished\, which honour\, not the greatest achievements in science\, but the funniest. They’re called the ‘Ig’ Nobel Prizes\, and\, since their launch in 1991\, they’ve provided a humorous insight into the quirky side of scientific research. In this light-hearted presentation\, Barry Zussman\, of Torridge u3a\, takes a look at this year’s prize-winners. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Ig Nobel Prizes’ video \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:Inherent Uncertainty (The Complex Adaptive nature of Human Behaviour)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor David Snowden University of Pretoria\, Stellenbosch \nHuman groupings\, such as societies and organizations\, can be viewed as complex adaptive systems.\nThey exhibit intricate\, dynamic interactions and non-linear behaviours.\nThese systems adapt and evolve in response to internal and external factors\, often displaying emergent properties that are not predictable from the behaviour of individual components.\nThey adapt and self-organize\, where feedback loops influence the collective behaviour; and respond to environmental factors whilst evolving over time.\nWant to know more? SUMMARY:Climate Crisis Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:In this meeting we watched and discussed 2 videos that raise some searching questions in relation to Climate Change. \nAre future humans really our problem? A question explored by Dave Burlace from the ‘Just have a Think’ YouTube channel \nAre we the last generation — or the first sustainable one? Environmental data scientist Hannah Ritchie digs into the numbers behind human progress across centuries\, unpacking why the conventional understanding of sustainability is misleading and showing how we can be the first generation of humans to actually achieve it. \nQuestion Time During question time we watched a video linked in this article ‘Down the Drain: What went wrong with Britain’s water system?’  \nDiscussion Forum Exciting news from our new webmaster – We now have a discussion forum specific for the Climate Crisis group! SUMMARY:Out of Africa: The recent emergence of homo sapiens from East Africa\, and the complex story of the hominids that preceded us
DESCRIPTION:In this fascinating talk\, Robin Clegg of Swindon u3a will present a broad-brush overview of the human story over the last million years\, including how successive migrations were influenced by climatic factors\, and the surprising revelation that Homo sapiens were interbreeding with Neanderthals and Denisovans not all that long ago. He’ll also explain how recent developments in genetic research and DNA ‘detective’ technologies have greatly aided our better understanding of human evolution and our emergence as a global species. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Out of Africa’ video \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:MicroRNA & GO (Gene Ontology)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Ruth Lovering ; University College London \nMicroRNAs\, are small RNA molecules – genetic information carriers. They play a significant role in the regulation of gene expression (where genetic information is used to create functional proteins\, that perform specific biological tasks\, vital for cell and organism function). They have become a focus of research in understanding gene regulation and developing potential therapeutic interventions. \nGene Ontology serves as a structured framework for annotating and characterizing gene functions. When applied to the targets of microRNAs it aids in revealing how they effect specific biological functions. \nSounds complicated? Prof. Ruth Lovering makes it simple and enlightening. \nIf you’re already on the ‘Science & Technology’  group mailing-list\, you’ll be sent log-in details automatically.  To join the mailing-list\, just click on the ‘CONTACT US’ link in the menu bar above.

SUMMARY:Secrets of the Human Brain
DESCRIPTION:Some years ago\, the celebrated American physicist and science writer Michio Kaku famously remarked that “The human brain has 100 billion neurons\, each connected to 10\,000 other neurons… sitting on your shoulders is the most complicated object in the known universe.”  Well\, in this interactive talk\, retired university lecturer and researcher Dr Bob Pullen (Prudhoe & District u3a) will share with us some of the most interesting\, and often amazing facts about the brain\, and how it works.  But that’s not all – he’ll also get us\, the audience\, to test how left or right-handed we are\, and he’ll show us how our brains can sometimes be fooled into seeing things that aren’t actually there.  He’ll even explain how men’s and women’s brains really are different (as if we didn’t suspect that already)! \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Secrets of the Human Brain’ video \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch \n
