SUMMARY:How to use https://u3a.social
DESCRIPTION:20th January @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nSocial media is now a big part of how we stay connected. While some large platforms\, such as Facebook\, have concerns around privacy and data use\, the Fediverse offers a more open\, secure\, and community-focused alternative.  Fediverse sites are free of ads\, tracking\, algorithms\, big business and billionaires … they are community sites – owned and managed by the community for the community. \nWe’re pleased to say this is now being introduced across the U3A network\, and we hope many members will join us and take part. \nSo this month we look at how to use the newly created social media Fediverse site https://u3a.social. \nWe start with a summary of past talks on the Fediverse and real time bidding (how targeted ads work) before walking through creating and using an account.  Also covered is how to find groups\, friends and news sources to follow (such as users on other Fediverse sites\, Bluesky and RSS).  Of course we’ll have a demo. \nAs always\, plenty of time is reserved for discussions. \nJoining details will be emailed to subscribers.  If you aren’t a member\, it’s free to join here https://u3acommunities.org/subscribe-to-computing-forum/. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Donald Trump's Unforgettable First Year
DESCRIPTION:Barely a year has passed since his inauguration\, yet even the most fanciful of apocalyptic predictions about how Trump’s second term as US President would unfold\, have fallen way short of the jaw-dropping reality. So\, for our first meeting of 2026\, we’ll be taking a look back at the extraordinary events of the last twelve months\, and ahead to what may be coming next\, both for Americans at home\, and for the rest of us around the world. But whatever happens\, one thing is certain – the ‘white-knuckle ride’ has only just begun – so why not join us for an hour of nervous crystal-gazing! \nIf you haven’t yet done so\, there’s still time to join our mailing list\, which will ensure that you receive those all-important Zoom log-in details… just click here: Subscribe to the Current Affairs group

SUMMARY:Was there a Big Bang?
DESCRIPTION:In 1929\, Edwin Hubble established a correlation between galactic redshift and distance. For nearly a century\, the prevailing scientific consensus has attributed this redshift to cosmic expansion\, forming the foundation of the Big Bang theory. However\, recent data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has introduced observations that challenge standard cosmological models. In this presentation\, David Youll (Basingstoke u3a) reviews the historical dominance of the Big Bang theory\, examines the anomalies identified by the JWST\, and explores whether a “Tired Light” model offers a more accurate framework for these new findings. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Was there a Big Bang?’\n(recordings are for personal/private use only – please do not share this link) \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:From Fuming Volcanic Vents to Extinction Events
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Tamsin Mather\, Professor of Earth Sciences\, University College Oxford  \nThis month Professor Tamsin Mather will be investigating how volcanic eruptions can alter Earth’s atmosphere and climate\, sometimes with devastating consequences for life. \nDrawing on her expertise in volcanic gases and atmospheric chemistry\, she links present-day volcanic emissions to episodes of extreme environmental change in the past. Her talk explores how massive eruptions have triggered global cooling or warming\, disrupted ecosystems and contributed to major extinction events. \nSubscribe to Geology

SUMMARY:The Ig Nobel Prizes: 2025 edition
DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, the ultimate recognition of ground-breaking scientific research has been the award of a Nobel Prize. But there’s another series of annual awards\, less prestigious but no less cherished\, which honour\, not the greatest achievements in science\, but the funniest. They’re called the ‘Ig’ Nobel Prizes\, and\, since their launch in 1991\, they’ve provided a humorous insight into the quirky side of scientific research. In this light-hearted presentation\, Barry Zussman\, from Torridge u3a\, will spill the beans (and much else besides!) on the wackiest prize-winners of 2025. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Ig Nobel Prizes (2025)’ \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:Tackling the Challenge of Antibiotic Resistance\, One Step at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Armed with a deeper understanding of the drivers of antibiotic resistance\, covered at last month’s meeting*\, Beryl Oppenheim (York u3a) will now explore the challenges faced in preventing it or minimising its impact\, including the roles played by societal factors\, human & medical behaviour\, and economic & political factors. Advances in rapid diagnostic testing for infectious disease and antibiotic resistance could provide a unique opportunity\, however\, these may face similar barriers to those encountered in the development of novel antimicrobials.  All of which means that\, despite all the other pressing challenges facing our world today\, this is one that we really cannot afford to ignore. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Antibiotic Resistance (part 2)’\n(recordings are for personal/private use only – please do not share this link) \n*if you missed Part 1\, you can catch up by watching this recording:  Antibiotic Resistance (Part 1) \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:The Neuroscience of Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Anil Seth\n University of Sussex \nYou may well know Anil Seth from television appearances or his popular science books. \nWhen you look around\, it feels like you’re simply seeing reality. But neuroscientist Anil Seth argues that what you see\, hear\, and feel is more like a story your brain tells itself\, a ‘hallucination’ shaped and corrected by sensory signals. In this engaging talk\, he explains how the brain’s predictions create not only our experiences of the world\, but also our sense of self. \nIf you are not already subscribed\, subscription is free and you will receive joining details and news about forthcoming Leading Edge meetings https://u3acommunities.org/subscribe-to-leading-edge/

SUMMARY:CLIMATE CHANGE\, BIODIVERSITY & ECOSYSTEMS
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity is a measure all living things on Earth & their interconnection (animals\, plants…). Population of living things has declined by 69% globally since 1970 due to climate change\, pollution and loss of habitat. But we rely upon biodiversity for food\, clean air and water. We describe the UK and global response to this crisis. \nianhawker101@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Demographic Time-bomb
DESCRIPTION:In common with many other developed countries\, the UK’s birth-rate has been falling for some time\, and now stands at around 1.5 children per woman\, far below the so-called ‘replacement’ rate of 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population profile. If this decline is not turned around soon\, there will eventually be too few working-age tax-payers to fund the ever-growing number of older people requiring costly medical and social care (let alone the workforce to provide this care). Several potential solutions have been suggested\, both fiscal and societal\, but most of them are either expensive\, controversial\, or both. So\, at this month’s meeting\, we’ll look at the various options\, and – who knows – maybe we’ll even come up with some novel ideas of our own for the Chancellor to consider as she prepares her upcoming Budget! \nIf you haven’t yet done so\, there’s still time to join our mailing list\, which will ensure that you receive those all-important Zoom log-in details… just click here: Subscribe to the Current Affairs group

SUMMARY:Understanding Antibiotic Resistance: Background\, bugs\, biomes and biofilms
DESCRIPTION:While most people are aware of the huge concerns about antibiotic resistance\, there are often misunderstandings regarding what it means and how it works. In this talk – the first of two on this important topic – Beryl Oppenheim (York u3a) will explain the background to the problem\, before delving a little deeper into the science behind antibiotic resistance: how and why it occurs\, the genetic basis for the development of resistance\, where it happens – both in nature and the human body – and what this all means in terms of risks to individuals and vulnerable populations. \nTo view the recording\, click here… ‘Understanding Antibiotic Resistance (part 1)’\n(the recording is for personal/private use only – please do not share this link) \nTo contact us about the Science & Technology group\, click here… Get in touch

SUMMARY:Seeing to the Event Horizons of Supermassive Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Dan Wilkins \n Kavli Institute\, Stanford University \nOn Monday\, 29th September at 5:00 PM hear groundbreaking perspectives from a leading figure at the Kavli Institute. \nRecent breakthroughs near black hole event horizons are offering exciting new views into some of the universe’s most mysterious regions. Using powerful X-ray telescopes\, scientists have observed light bending around black holes\, just as Einstein predicted over a century ago. \nThey’ve also detected faint echoes of X-rays bouncing off material hidden behind black holes\, something never seen before. These findings help researchers understand how matter behaves in extreme gravity\, how black holes consume surrounding material\, and how energetic jets are launched. \nIt’s a major step toward mapping the chaotic environments near black holes and unlocking secrets about space\, time\, and gravity itself. \nIf you are not already subscribed\, subscription is free and you will receive joining details and news about forthcoming Leading Edge meetings https://u3acommunities.org/subscribe-to-leading-edge/
