Human Personality: Nature or Nurture?

Have you ever thought about whether you got your amazing intelligence from your parents? Or maybe you’ve been wondering whether that grumpy old git in your local u3a group got his irritating habits from a difficult childhood? In other words, to what extent are our personalities shaped by our genes, or by our upbringing? This ‘Nature’ versus ‘Nurture’ question has perplexed – and divided – the experts for well over a century, but in more recent times the application of novel molecular biological techniques has been providing new insights into this age-old debate. In this fascinating talk, John Warr of Winchester u3a will summarise the past and present work in this contentious area.
