The History of Timekeeping: From Stonehenge to Strontium

Ever since the advent of agriculture, our ancestors needed a way to measure the passing of time; not just the time of day but, more importantly, the time of year as well. Nowadays, we’re surrounded by gadgets which do this for us, but back then they had to work it all out for themselves. In this talk, John Cosier, of Bognor Regis u3a, will take a look back at the development of calendars and clocks, from the primitive to the hi-tech, and along the way he’ll also explain the origins of the seven-day week, the 24-hour day, the 60-minute hour, and the 60-second minute. I’m sure you’ll want to make ‘time’ for this fascinating story!
