Ever since Charles Babbage began work on his first mechanical calculating machine 200 years ago, in 1822, the prospect of rapid, automated data processing has been a key driver of technological progress. But it wasn’t until WW2, and in particular the urgency of cracking enemy codes, that electronic, rather than mechanical solutions became feasible. And, in the years that followed, one company in particular – IBM – would become synonymous with this quest. The computer age was born, and, along the way, countless other applications and innovations have followed at breakneck speed. In this fascinating talk, retired IBM senior software engineer Tom Holloway, of Headington u3a, will share his reminiscences of an eventful career with the pioneering multinational technology corporation.
