Leaps of Faith: The bizarre history of self-experimentation

10 April, 2024 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Think about self-experimentation, and it probably conjures up an image like this… Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic yarn of the mad doctor and his evil alter ego. But just occasionally, truth really can be stranger than fiction. In fact, there are many historical – and some surprisingly recent – examples of ordinary, respectable scientists who have chosen to take the ultimate gamble of putting their own lives on the line, for the common good. And it’s their extraordinary real-life stories that Barry Zussman, of Torridge u3a, will be sharing with you today.
