Nerve Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine

His research lab focuses on understanding and repairing damage in the nervous system, using a wide range of techniques.
This talk will focus on how the lab is trying to solve some of the challenges associated with peripheral nerve injury. Nerves extend throughout the body, allowing muscles to be controlled and sensation to be experienced. Nerve damage is common and can be extremely debilitating, resulting in loss of sensation and movement and associated with chronic pain. Nerves have some natural capacity to regenerate following damage, but in many cases there is a need for surgical tissue grafting, and the slow rate of regeneration limits recovery of function. Advances in tissue engineering have resulted in the development of lab-grown living artificial nerve tissue that can potentially be used to bridge nerve gaps as an alternative to tissue grafts. New small molecules have been developed that can accelerate regeneration and potentially improve outcomes. These new advances will be discussed in the context of the research findings to date,  and how the technologies might progress towards clinical use in the future.
