Glass

Glass is one of the oldest materials used by man, and also one of the most attractive modern materials used by artists. Glass is variously chosen for its transparency, strength, resistance to chemical attack, ability to be shaped in many different ways, and much more besides. In this talk, Peter Goodhew, a retired materials scientist from Chester u3a, describes some of the history of, and the science behind, this fascinating material, illustrated with some fine examples of decorative glassware from his wife’s collection.
