Mini-trams: The Transport Solution You’ve Never Heard of!

If you were living in Sheffield fifty years ago, you’ll be familiar with this image. It’s an artists’ impression of how the city’s revolutionary new driverless mini-tram monorail system would look when it’s finished. But, like so many other ambitious UK infrastructure projects, funding concerns meant that it never got beyond the drawing-board, and in 1975, the Ministry of Transport finally pulled the plug. At our March meeting, Sam Dauncey will share this story and others about the mini-tram concept and the engineering behind it, then Neill Allan will tell us about their modern incarnation, and how AI is helping to make mini-trams a reality.
