Doctor Kirstin Lemon, Science Programme Manager at the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, will be speaking to us about “Two Geoparks, One Story: The Geology of Cuilcagh Lakelands and Mourne Gullion Strangford, Northern Ireland”
Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark straddles the border between Co. Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and Co. Cavan in the Republic of Ireland. It was the first area in the UK to be recognised as a Geopark in 2001 and in 2008 became the first transnational Geopark. The area covers a vast amount of geological time, from the oldest Precambrian rocks through glaciation to the continuing active formation of cave and karst features. Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark is spectacularly beautiful. Forged by nature, torn apart by volcanic activity and sculpted by ice.
