NASA SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) Mission

Speaker: Dr. Rosemary Morrow
SWOT Oceanography Science Lead
NASA, CNES (the French National Space Agency), and Canadian and UK space agency partners have cooperated to make the first global survey of Earth’s surface water. The SWOT mission, with its wide swath of altimetry technology, will be able to cover most of the world’s ocean and freshwater bodies with repeated high-resolution elevation measurements, providing observations of fine details of the ocean’s surface topography (description of the physical features of an area), and measuring how water bodies change over time.
Rosemary Morrow is the Oceanography Science Lead and will guide us through the aims and findings to date: for example, small-scale ocean features contribute to the ocean-atmosphere exchange of heat and carbon, major components in global climate change. SWOT’s detailed information on ocean circulation will improve understanding of the ocean environment, including motion of life-sustaining nutrients and harmful pollutants.
